A Rock the Dress shoot is still a relatively new trend in the wedding industry. It gives brides a chance to wear their wedding dress again and get some really different photos, why spend all that money on dry cleaning and storage when you can wear it again? We have done a rock the dress shoot before with a couple who wanted some photos in the Peak District, they even brought their own picnic with them which we ate on a rock surrounded by climbers!
We do the shoots for all sorts of reasons – often for couples who come to us as they were disappointed with their wedding photos (clearly they were not taken by us!) Recently though we wanted to showcase how you can really use a rock the dress shoot to have fun with your makeup and wedding styling. Perhaps you opted for some nice neutral makeup on your wedding day but on a night out you like to wear false eyelashes and lots of eyeliner – well why not bring out your personality by incorporating this style into a rock the dress shoot.
So the idea was planted to show how a typical bride could use makeup and styling to really ROCK her dress in two very different ways. Eleanor, one of my old friends and a 2011 bride (check out her California wedding here!) suggested her friend Marie-Anne Kelly who is a fantastic make up artist. Marie-Anne came up with two really cool makeup looks for a romantic, flower fairy style bride and a rocky, punk bride. Eleanor and her friend Lindsey were our models for the day.
Despite the morning gale force winds we arrived at Sheffield wedding venue Kenwood Hall, our location for the first “look”. The hotel has amazing grounds with a pond and lots of trees, with the winter sunshine we couldn’t have picked a better location for the romantic wedding look. Eleanor’s look was completed with a floral headpiece provided kindly by Boutique Paeony florist in Sheffield. Eleanor’s eyelashes were frosted with snow to really complete the look! The ladies wore their own wedding dresses which suited the look really well – Eleanor was our boho flower fairy and Lindsey the dramatic princess with her gown covered in lacy leaves.
Marie-Anne then transformed our ladies into rock chicks with dramatic smoky eyes – topped off with leather jackets and boots, a welcome addition to the cold weather! We travelled about 5 minutes down the road to Mount Pleasant park in Sharrow for some photos in a basketball court covered in graffiti. The ladies really rocked the last look all mean and moody (maybe that was just the cold!). We even had chance to try out some luminous brow makeup which looked amazing. Boutique Paeony provided a fabulous bouquet to go with the rock and roll brides in red and black surrounded by feathers.
We walked back through a lively cricket match in the park during which Lindsey “stole” the ball when it got caught under her dress as she was walking out!
This is what rock the dress shoots are all about, having fun and experimenting with different looks – what do you love to do? Where would you rock your dress? Do you love luminous eyebrows and hair curlers??! Leave us a message below.
